Driving from Paphos to Ayia Napa

If I drive to Ayia Napa from Paphos will I need my passport? I ask this because I remember at some point when I flew into in the past we had to drive through a military check point. Will I still need to drive through this check point? Any information would be good, thanks.

Ayia Napa is located in SOUTHERN Cyprus ie the Republic and is on the same "side" (meaning the South) of the island so all you need to do is drive along the coastal motorway to get from one to the other.

Military checkpoints are only at the border crossings between Southern Cyprus and the North - the TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). You may be confusing Ayia Napa with Famagusta where there is a border crossing and yes a miltary checkpoint.

When the Turks invaded back in 1974, Famagusta became a ghost town as it was right on the border and, as it was the main tourist resort on the east of the island, the "resort" moved down the coast to what is now Ayia Napa.

If you do want to actually visit Famagusta, you will need to cross the border and show your passport but it's a simple procedure and your passport is not stamped.

See my border crossings page for more details.
