Which Archeological Site in Cyprus is the Best?

by David
(Los Organos, Peru)

Tomb of the Kings

Tomb of the Kings

My wife and I live in Peru, where Machu Picchu, one of the 7 wonders of the world is located.

We are impressed with your site!

We have friends who would like to travel to Cyprus. Is there a particular archeological destination that you would recommend as the best there?

Best archeological sites in Cyprus
by: Helen

Some of the best archeological sites are the UNESCO World heritage listed Tombs of the Kings (see the picture I added), the wonderful mosaics next to Paphos harbour and the ancient 2nd century AD town of Kourion or Curium just outside Limassol.

There are also many beautiful UNESCO listed Byzantine churches in the depths of the Troodos mountains. Some require a little tenacity to get inside as the keys are normally held by a local villager who is most likely to be found either in the village coffee shop or asleep somewhere in the forest!

The best of these churches is probably Ayios Nikolaias tis Stegis near to Kakopetria village north of Troodos square. There is a lovely walk (or cycle ride) through the forest to this church, so well worth a half day of your time to visit.
