Cyprus Wine

by Shannon Hilton

My girlfriend and I are getting married in Cyprus in December. We would like a bottle of wine that we can drink and take the bottle home with us as a memory. Do you have any suggestions on a fine wine? Preferably something sweet.

Cyprus Wine

The Commandaria wine, for which Cyprus is famous, is the oldest known wine in continuous production, in the world.
The Knights Templer 'Commanded' that this sweet wine be made available to the crusaders, as it travelled well. Hence the name.
In my village the grapes are picked from the small vines which grow on the rocky arid soil, then laid out in the sun for ten days.
Any rain fall ruins the harvest.
The grapes are then pressed and the golden liquid fermented. Toast your future together with the oldest wine in the world. Good luck and best wishes from Louvaras in the Commandaria district.

Fine wine in Cyprus
by: Helen

I would not say that Cyprus has any "fine wine" in the same calibre of say French fine wine. While wine has been made here for centuries, the industry has really only started to shine in the last 15-20 years with the introduction of modern wine making techniques.

Much of the best wine here is dry made from good imported grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. See my best Cyprus wine page for suggestions.

However if you like sweet wine then I would suggest a wine unique to Cyprus, the famous Commanderia. It's not to my taste as it's sweet but try it and take home a unique piece of Cyprus history.
