Where to discover the real Cyprus after 60 years away

I will be travelling to Cyprus in May 2014, with my partner and my parents. My father did National Service nearly 60 years ago and he fell in love with the Troodos Mountains. He hasn't returned since, so I'm going to make sure he does while he is still able bodied!

Could you give a recommendation for a traditional family run hotel in the mountains so we can really get a personal view of life?

We will stay for a week and will get a hire car from the airport. How many days would you recommend in the Mountains? We would like to split our time and stay somewhere else for a few days. So a recommendation staying in another area would be really useful too.

Thank you so much.

Kind regards,
Rachel Moreau

Traditional unspoilt Cyprus
by: Helen (website owner)

Cyprus has changed a lot since your father was here 60 years ago. But a visit and stay in the Troodos is the perfect way to experience traditional unspoilt Cyprus far from the tourist crowds on the coast.

I would recommend a stay in one of the Agrotourism properties in the Troodos mountains. They are old houses/properties renovated with modern fittings but retaining the traditional buildings. Most are family owned and run and a favourite of mine up there is the recently renovated Ambelikos hotel in the Eastern Troodos, close to the popular Agros village. It's also a good area for walking with several nature trails nearby that are both easy and moderate for keen hikers.

As you are planning to hire a car - check out my recommended car hire firm by the way as they consistently seem to be the cheapest and allow you to pick up at the airport - I would suggest you keep to the unspoilt areas of the island.

The Polis and Latchi area is very beautiful and unspoilt with the Akamas peninsula being the last untouched area of coastline on the south side of the island. There are also several Agroutourism properties in the area.

A great Agrotourism property in the Polis/Latchi area is the Leonidas village houses in Goudi village, 5km from the centre of Polis. There are 5 separate houses arranged round a pool in a tranquil setting.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to be located near the coast, take a look at the selection of hotels on my Polis hotels page.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip to Cyprus next year.

Helen
