Paphos versus Ayia Napa in Cyprus

by Mai Ashraf
(Egypt)

I'm coming to Cyprus on the 24th of May and I was wondering whether I should go to Ayia Napa or Paphos.

I would really appreciate it if you could help me out.

Protaras

You could always go to Protaras, lovely beaches and restaurants and not too noisy at night. I love this part of the island and am coming back in September.

Ayia Napa or Paphos as places to stay in Cyprus
by: Helen (website owner)

The choice between Ayia Napa or Paphos largely depends on what type of holiday you are looking for and also perhaps your age!

Ayia Napa is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches like Nissi Beach and also for its often loud and noisy nightlife. Younger people are particularly attracted to the resort especially in high summer for the livelu bars and nightclubs and spend much of the day asleep on the beach.

It won't be so busy at the end of May so if sandy beaches are a priority, then Ayia Napa is a good choice. It's also not a long transfer for you from Larnaca as flights from Egypt don't come into Paphos.

Paphos is more of a family resort with UNESCO heritage sites like the Tombs of the Kings if you like archeology. There are some sandy beaches eg. at Coral bay a few km outside of the town, otherwise beaches are mainly shingle/pebbles. It still has lots of tavernas and bars but it's not so noisy as long as you don't stay in the centre of town.

If you like walking or cycling then Paphos is a better option as you are close to the Akamas peninsula and also the Paphos forest. Scenery is beautiful and you can drive into the forest areas quickly to get away from the coast. There are also good wineries to sample wine - there are NONE in the Ayia Napa area.

Last thing to consider. You have to drink bottled water in the Larnaca area as water there is desalinated and, while safe to drink, does not taste good. In Paphos we have reservoirs or boreholes and water tastes fine!

Why not grab a copy of my 101 things to do guide to help you plan your holiday. You'll find it has lots of great things in the Paphos area.

Enjoy your holiday.
