Where to stay in Cyprus

by Amanda
(UK)

Basically I'm looking for advice about what area to stay in Cyprus.
I'll be visiting Cyprus in September with my boyfriend. We are 25 and 31 respectively.
We enjoy visiting pubs and going out to restaurants to eat. However, we do not want to be surrounded by 'Brits abroad'. We'd like to sample Cypriot culture without going too far out of our depth. It would be nice if we could visit the beach each day and to not be a million miles away from an airport.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Best places for couples in Cyprus

If you don't want to be surrounded by "Brits abroad" I would suggest coming to Polis/Latchi. We have beaches here and a good selection of bars and restaurants but it is a LOT quieter than the bigger resports of Paphos/Limassol and Larnaca/Ayia Napa.

You could try Paralimni/Protaras near Larnaca - the beaches are sand versus gravel/sand on the Latchi side and it's where the younger 30-something Cypriots go in the summer months.

But basically anywhere that's more touristy, you are going to find lots of potentially loud, fat beer-bellied tourists!

I'd recommend hiring a car for a few days to get into the hillside villages (plenty near Polis/Latchi) for a taste of the real Cyprus.
See my towns page for more info on what to expect from each.
