Where to stay in Cyprus

by Rachel
(Southampton)

We are looking to come to Cyprus at end Sept/early Oct. We have a 5 yr old daughter. Ideally we would like to base ourselves near a beach as my daughter would love to spend time there. However we would also like to explore the island. So I have several questions .

Where in your opinion would make a good base to explore, historic sites, towns, markets, mountains etc. What are the bus services like (it would be nice not to have to worry about driving) or is a car necessary. We would like to explore but not spend lots of time travelling. Are there any sites you would recommend.

Thanks so much for this site and the info you provide and that you are willing to answer questions.

Best places to stay in Cyprus for exploration

The answers to all your questions are within the site so I'll direct you to relevant pages as necessary.

First yes there are buses but they really only connect the main towns. If you want to explore Cyprus properly especially mountain areas you will need to hire a car.

For exploration AND proximity to historical sites I would recommend Paphos. You have the tombs of the kings and the mosaics there and you are close to the beach. Within a half hour drive you have Kourion (old Roman ruined city) near Limassol and the Troodos area is within 1 hour from Paphos.

Whilst Limassol is more central in terms of exploration it's bigger but is a possible option too for getting around - also closer to Larnaca if you fly in there rather than Paphos.

For sites to explore, see section on my things to do page.

Gor info on the towns see Paphos and Limassol pages.

For where to stay see Paphos hotels, Limassol hotels and also take a look at our private apartments page for great value accommodation.

I'm biased as we live near Polis 45 mins from Paphos but it's not the best location if you want to eplore whole island as takes 45 mins to get to Paphos.

Enjoy your trip.

Helen
