Restaurant and taverna openings in low season

We are thinking of visiting Cyprus in early May, staying in Anafotia and travelling around the island. We have been informed that outside the 'tourist' season quite a few restaurants and tavernas are closed on the island. Is this true or just related to the popular tourist beach resorts?

What is open in Cyprus in May?
by: Helen

May to October is classed as the main tourist season in Cyprus. Outside of these months, many restuarants and tavernas are closed but mainly between January and March when owners take a much needed break and/or carry out refurbishments on their establishments.

While May and October are the beginning and tail ends of the season respectively, virtually all tavernas will be open throughout. Outside of July and August when Cypriots take their holidays too, some restuarants in the hill villages close for one day per week which varies from village to village.

The only thing you may find in many of the more remote areas is that there is a limited menu choice. Many city dwellers refuse to eat in hill villages as they think food is not fresh enough due to lack of frequent trade. All you actually need to do in fact is stop at a place that takes your fancy and ask them what is fresh or what they are cooking for the family meal - you will get a delicious and fresh home cooked meal, usually at a good price!

Enjoy the REAL secret Cyprus away from the tourist resorts!
