Fantastic news! On Monday March 29th the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities will attend a ceremony marking the beginning of the construction of the Limnitis road in the buffer zone.
This will lead to the opening of a new crossing point linking the remote Pyrgos area to Nicosia, through the occupied areas. And for residents in the Polis area, it also means that a crossing into the North will be under an hour away.
The project consists of a 2.2km section of road located in the UN-controlled buffer zone and another section of about 4.5km located in the northern part of the island.
There has been much talk about the opening of the Limnitis crossing since the summer of 2009 but the occasion marks something of a landmark. Something is finally happening!
The road should be complete in just 4 months so local residents can look forward to being able to use the new crossing from around the middle of August.
Hurrah!
