Gluten free tavernas and shops in Cyprus
by: Helen

In the shops, it's easy to spot gluten free food - the labels are usually in English too! Look in the health food sections of supermarkets - you'll need to go the larger ones as the smaller ones have a more limited range.

In restaurants, nearly all of them have English speaking staff (many don't even have any Cypriot waiters so even the locals have to speak in English) so just ask for gluten free or wheat free food.

If you want to ask for gluten free food in Greek you need to say

"Horis glouteni" (gluten is almost the same word and horis means "without")

Remember that many Cypriot specialities are gluten free anyway - yohgurt based dips, pork kebabs etc. Just avoid the bread and pastry.
