What grand house design do you have for your dream home in Cyprus?

If you're an architect or designer, then you will have some pretty good ideas on house design. For the rest of us, we need a little inspiration.

architect plans

Here are our tips for deciding on the right house design:

  • Decide on the type of property you want - traditional or modern.
NB: If you are building in a village, the exterior style may have to fit with the rest of the village architecture eg. traditional stone finish.
  • Scour interior design and home style magazines as well as the internet for inspiration. Compile a house design file from your cuttings and photocopies.
  • Visit your chosen location and take pictures of properties you like. This is especially important if you want a traditional stone finish as there are many different stone colours and construction techniques.
  • Meet with your architect and share your design ideas/pictures with him/her.
Once you have specified the number of rooms required, a good architect will come up with a bespoke design to fit with your vision and also complement the plot you have chosen.
  • Once you recieve your initial drawings, study the plans carefully and make changes as appropriate.
For example, if you really want a study but it appears there is no room, see if you can spot any "wasted" space eg. in hallways.
  • Make sure you have plans for the exterior as well as the interior.

Tip: Most Cyprus properties are built on a concrete platform - 1m above the ground. Make sure your plans show steps up to entrances and verandhas or you may not be able to get in through the front door easily!

Final Tip:

Make sure your house design allows for some SHADED areas outside - believe us you will need them in high Summer!

These are shown as "covered areas" on architect plans. Ideally they should be north facing - a south facing verandah will simply be a sun trap when you're desperate to cool down on a hot Summer's day!
