Established since 2003, Cyprus wines from the Ezousa winery in Kannaviou offer a wonderful selection of fine tasting wines. This small boutique winery is situated in Kannaviou village just a few kilometres from the new Kannaviou dam in the Ezousa valley and produces about 50,000 bottles per annum. The young owner Michalis Constantinides has modern wine production equipment and is focussing on producing high quality wines from both indigenous and imported grapes.
Among the excellent wines produced by Michalis are my current favourite dry white made from the local Xynisteri grape called Ayios Chrystostomos. It has a wonderful fresh aroma and the flavours linger in the mouth long after the first sip. The equivalent red table wine called Diomedes is also excellent made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Mataro (30%) and Mavro (30%). But one of the best wines from Ezousa is the rich and powerful Maratheftiko with a stylish label. A rosé is also produced from the same grape with a wonderful fresh strawberry taste. There is also an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with an equally stylish label and bottle.
