Established since 1998, Cyprus wines from the Domaine Vlassides winery, located in the traditional Troodos village of Koilani, offer a small but superb selection of fine tasting wines. Currently producing around 40,000 bottles per year, the owner Sophocles Vlassides takes pride in producing most of his wine from imported grape varieties. His Shiraz is his most popular variety followed by a Cabernet Sauvignon. He also produces a good quality Sauvignon Blanc and small quantities of everyday house wines. But you will not find thousands of bottles of poor tasting cheap table wine here as the majority of production is focussed on the Shiraz and Cabernet grapes. At €9 Euros a bottle, they may not be for everyday drinking but one sip of the Shiraz will have you thirsting for more. This is a seriously good Shiraz wine, more than able to stand up against comparable wines from other countries.
Sophocles Vlassides is a fully qualified oenologist in Cyprus having trained at Davis university in the USA. The love of wine making is in the family as his father Theofalis worked for Keo for many years and is a self taught wine maker! The beauty about a visit to this winery is the setting for the wine tasting. The wine is produced and stored in several buildings in the village but the tasting takes place in the comfort of the Vlassides family home - you can taste the wine in the vine covered courtyard and listen to Theofalis telling you how the winery came into being.
