Another Dry Winter

After two wet winters, 2010/11 has so far been very dry. Although we have experienced colder temperatures than normal, especially during February this year when night time temperatures dropped as low as 5 degrees even on the coast, the cold weather has generally not been accompanied by any heavy rain.

As a result, inflow into the reservoirs since November 2010 is only 23 million cubic metres (MCM); At the same point last year, we had over 100 MCM. Granted last year's rainfall was far higher than normal, but given that the island needs at least 80 MCM to cover agriculture and domestic needs, we are unlikely to get a great deal more rain this winter meaning the reservoirs will empty over the summer period.

While the reservoirs are currently 53% full, people need to be vigilant about saving water or come October, we'll have another water crisis.

If you'd like to keep up to date with the water shortage situation in Cyprus, see these reservoir storage statistics.

Dual Carriageway planned for Tomb of Kings Road

Plans are afoot to build a dual carriageway along the Tombs of the Kings road in Paphos as part of a new ring road system around the town. Local business owners are up in arms as they are worried about losing business when construction commences, planned for June this year, just when the tourist season is in full swing!

Paphos is currently a building site on many stretches of road such as the ongoing roadworks between Chlorokas, Kissonerga and Coral bay and the question has to be asked as such a major road upgrade is needed.

The proposed two-lane stretch will cut through a tourist area close to popular restaurants like Fat Mama's making it potentially difficult/dangerous for pedestrians to cross and, while car parks have been proposed along the new road, some businesses claim they will lose out first during construction and subsequently, when tourists find it difficult to stop.

Watch this space for more details.

It's Carnival time in Paphos

With more than 50 groups already signed up to participate in the Paphos carnival procession, the 2011 carnival is set to be the biggest ever for Paphos. The theme for this year’s King of the Carnival is Dionysius, the god of wine and entertainment and this year’s celebrations are all about having fun too.

The 10 day Carnival period starts on Feb 24th culminating in the processioin through the town on Saturday March 5th. Aftwerwards there will be a free concert including performances by Nickole and Greek band Melisses. Here's hoping the weather will improve for the parade as this weekend is forecast to be wet and windy.
