Best snorkeling beaches and best sandy beaches in Cyprus

by Ann

We would like to know where the best sandy beaches are (pretty and not too full of bars and sun tan lotion) and the best beaches for snorkeling - (pretty, clean, pebbles, quiet water).

AND if any of these are close to a nice happy, quaint town with some action but not full of the resort machinery, that would be best of all!

Cyprus beaches for snorkeling
by: Helen

While the best sandy beaches are on the Larnaca side of the island eg. Nissi beach in Ayia Napa or Fig Tree bay in Protaras, these beaches are VERY popular so unless you are visiting outside of May-September, I would advise against them if you want to be "far from the tourist crowds" and the bars, noisy teenagers etc.

The Polis/Latchi side of the island has the most unspoilt beaches. Lara bay on the Akamas peninsula is sandy and stunning but takes a little effort to access as you need a 4x4 vehicle.

Relax beach down at Pomos has pebbles and lots of small rocks so you can snorkel happily, though Pomos itself is very quiet.

Latchi is a good base as you have pebble/shingle/sand beaches on either side of the town and lots of small coves as you go up the coastline from Latchi towards the Akamas - perfect for snorkeling!

Alternatively you have the totally unspoilt Chrysochous bay stretching from Polis past Argaka and other coastal villages. It's a mix of sand and shingle but has various rocky sections for snorkeling.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the Polis area but none of the noise and tourist hype. NB: In the middle two weeks of August, it does get very busy even in Latchi/Polis as Cypriots like to come down from Nicosia for their holidays.

Se my beaches page for examples of the above beaches.
