Best Car Hire for Troodos mountains

by Peter Chesney
(Dagenham, Essex)

I'm flying to Pafos on 14/08/08 for 7 days and staying in the Louis Paethon Beach Club Hotel.

I'm planning to drive to the Troodos mountains at some point - my question is whether or not I would need a 4x4 to get there? Or are the roads good enough to just get an ordinary car.

Also my second question is would it be necessary to stay overnight when I get there or could you make it there and back in a day comfortably?

Any advice would be grand!

Thanks - Peter.

Driving to Troodos Mountains
by: Helen

You only need a 4x4 vehicle for the Troodos if you are planning to drive "off road". All main routes into the Troodos mountains from Paphos are on good quality tarmac roads.

The fastest one and the one we normally use is via Pachna. Take the route to the left after you pass Pissouri on the motorway. The road is signposted to Avdimou and Pachna and is scenic as well as being fast plus it goes via the village of Omodhos which is well worth a visit.

Depending on which road you use, the journey from Paphos takes about 1.5 hours so can be easily done in one day. If you do go off road, however, you need to allow extra time as the off road trails are on dusty gravel tracks which wind their way through the vast forest areas. To see the Venetian bridges, for example, you definitely need a 4x4 vehicle.

So you can visit the Troodos in one (long) day or perhaps stay overnight to fully appreciate the cool mountain air! Just book your hotel in advance especially if visiting in August as the Cypriots holiday themselves in Troodos at this time and all hotels are very busy.

Best Wishes

Helen
